I have had the pleasure of describing to you the avatar of jboisvert27’s avatar for their blog. This clever icon is a simple postcard.
The rectangular card contains a postage stamp in the top right corner with a few stars and some waving stripes, intimating the iconic U.S Flag stamp. In the top center is a sketch of some pine trees and nature, a classic Maine scene. In the bottom center is a square with lines both straight and curvy. This is to represent writing on the card, from the writer and their new location, perhaps to friends or family.
To the casual viewer this postcard might seem inverted, but that would be because it is very hard to draw both sides of an object on a 2D plane. All of the critical pieces of a postcard are present for our viewing pleasure. Now this avatar is for a blog about travelling, and I think this postcard is a perfect representation of that. Looking at the big picture, postcards are often purchased or on sale at the many different places we travel to.
Whether you keep your postcard or send it off, the postcard is a perfect choice to symbolize the places you have visited or wish to see. The stamp, which is evocative of the American Flag, directly represents the United States, the country in which we live in. The pine trees represent going out into nature. Sometimes, a trip can be a simple hike through the woods, and that deserves its own representation on this avatar.
Finally, the writing on the postcard represents where you are and where you are going, which ties each point of travel together, like a collection of cards with each interesting place you’ve traveled.
In designing these avatars, both of us knew exactly what we wanted our blogs to be about, so choosing icons which well represent our topic was fairly easy. We both have main icons and smaller icons nestled in which add to the main topic. She has the postcard and the pine trees, while I have the railroad lines and the signal stand. While our avatars are simple sketches, they contain all they need to get the their respective ideas across.

A discussion was held between us as partners where a few questions were asked, and answers will given. I will go over them here. The first question I had asked after a brief introduction was, what is your blog going to be about? She responded simply, “It is going to be about travel.” (jboisvert27) My follow up question was, It is local or around the world travel? “Everywhere, locations in and outside of the state, and nice places to go be outside as well.” (jboisvert27), was the reply. Building off of these questions, I then asked if the pine trees on the postcard represented Maine, as it is one of our state symbols. She added that, “It was really more about traveling outside, going hiking, as an example.” (jboisvert27).
So concludes this little interview. As I stated before, I think this avatar this very clever for how simple it is. All of the items chosen are a key part of the blog, and we will look forward to the great places of travel which will surely be shown to us in this new blog.
