A conventional thing I'd like to give up is overconsumption. If overconsumption wasn't a thing financial stress may not be a thing for some people, enviromental benefits, and investing in quality over quantity. Overconsumption could lead to health issues for inviduals, increased dept. and not having enough room for things you actually need. Dont get me wrong, I do think its okay to be interested in what you like and invest your money into it. But it can become a problem for inviduals, like me. Trends are always going around on social media and most peoples first intincts are to join in on the trend. The issue is a lot of poeple have the fear of missing out and feel the need to join in on every trend and buy it. This could either be new producs, electronics, fast fasion, etc. If we ever were to live in a social media free world, I feel that almost everybody wouldnt be into over consuming products including myself. Without social media I wouldnt be able to see all the new clothes everyone is buying. If overconsumption was compelety gone I think that id be more involved in my relationships with others. I know that most of the time I talk to my family its always about something ive seen on social media and how badly I want it. But it also goes both ways, my siblings talk to me whenever they want something. My current relationships would be more focused on clear communication and mindfulness.

What I would like to give up is the expectations everyone has on each other as a society and the control the government has on us like taxes and politics and also technology. I never understood why everyone had such high expectations for each other when we are all working very hard to earn the same thing. The benefits of getting rid of society's expectations would be that we would all be uniquely ourselves without trying to conform to social beliefs; it would also allow for healthier relationships and personal growth and fulfillment. But a drawback would be people would stop cooperating because social norms make people act in less selfish ways which is very important for a society. Also getting rid of the control the government has will bring less spending and lower taxes because when people spend less that will lower the taxes on people and businesses. But a drawback would be it might cause conflict and arguments among people because people believe the government provides functions to maintain law and order and social stability. Limiting technology creates less waste which makes the earth healthier and decreases the toll on the environment. But a drawback is people are going to have to fill the roles of technology which might be challenging because people have relied so much on technology. I would have to go off the grid because I would get tempted by technology and social expectations and government. I think if i were to live off the grid I wouldn't care about my spot into the society and my relationships with people.

A part of conventional society that I would like to give up is social media. I feel like social media can be addictive and unhealthy for teens because I could spend hours just scrolling through reels. I like how McCandless gave up everything to connect with nature and live life to the fullest. I feel like being social or worrying too much about the stressors of life can take that peace away. Which is why I would get rid of social media.

What I think are some of the benefits of giving up social media would be that I would be able to reconnect with nature, my hobbies, friends, and family, and myself. I would be able to discover who I am without the need to scroll on Instagram, I’d be able to see the world around me with different eyes; I’d see the world without everyone shoving their opinions down my throat. I would also be able to get rid of the anxiety and stress that social media can bring. I wouldn’t have to compare myself to others, and I would be able to be more authentic. I think that some downsides of getting rid of social media are that I would lose connecting with friends and family that I dont see all the time. I wouldn’t really be able to stay in touch or see what's going on in their lives, which could make me isolated and slip away from my connections. I would also lose being informed of events or what is happening with my favorite musicians.

I’m not sure that I would be able to get rid of social media in my high school setting because that is relevant to high schoolers, so having them all talk about it would make me feel alone and tempted to join again. I feel likecouldn’t’yt do it alone because I have always been sociable, and being the only one not part of social media in my friend and family group would make me go crazy. I don’t think that I would fit into society if I gave up social media because it is so popular and widely used that if I gave it up, I feel like I would be judged for my decision.

I would like to give up all of it if I’m being honest. Money, societal expectations, the government's control on all of us, politics, taxes, having to work so hard just for pieces of paper that translate to money. I never understood it, why take something so beautiful like life and the Earth, and make it into something it’s not. Make it into something that has to be controlled. I would love to just live the way Chris McCandless lived. He had nothing to worry about other than what he was going to eat for dinner. No debt, no judgment, none of it. He experienced life the way it was meant to be lived.

The benefits of this lifestyle would be that so much stress would be relieved from my shoulders. The anxiety and burn out wouldn’t be in my mind every waking moment. However, the drawbacks would be the fear of having to find something to eat or you will die. Knowing that your life is in your hands and you need to make the right choices in order to survive.

I would have to do this lifestyle alone in another setting. Where I live now I have access to the internet, electricity, heat, and I have a job. In order to achieve this life I would need to abandon the one I have now. Quit my job, move into the wilderness, and learn to fend for myself. My current relationships would only last if they came with me. If I did this alone, I would not be in touch with any of them. Without having a phone, man made items like paper and pen, and not even having an address wouldn’t allow me to send any form of communication. Our relationships would either slowly fizzle out from not reaching out or I would end them before my journey.
