Pee Shy

One of the toughest things is trying to ask a complete stranger a question about what to do if you can’t pee. It can get pretty embarrassing asking this question because pretty much the whole point of me going there is to pee in a bottle and then pretty much go. So the fact that I cant do the one thing I came to do was kind of embarrassing

Well, I had this experience one time when I started this medication called Accutane. One of the side effects of this acne medication is that your body gets really dry, if you’re pregnant your child could have major birth defects, and it could do some major damage on your kidneys. So once a month until I got off the medication I’d go to the hospital and get my blood drawn and I’d have to take a pee test. Well, I got to the doctors one day and I knew as soon as I got to the doctors I wasn’t going to be able to pee because I had peed that morning not thinking.

I was sitting in the waiting room trying to drink as much water as possible before they called me in. Once I got in the nurse gave me a cup and said: “Okay just head into the bathroom and when you’re done put the sample into the metal box in the bathroom”. So I went into the bathroom and sat on the toilet for 10 minutes before I determined this pee isn’t coming out. I sat there for a second and said to myself “What am I going to say to her when I walk out and hand her the empty bottle?” So I open the door and asked: “What if I can’t pee?”. I kind of startled her because she had been waiting there ten minutes already and wasn’t paying attention so she didn’t see me come out of the bathroom. That definitely wasn’t my finest moment. But whatever she laughed and said it was fine and we’ll try again at the end of the appointment.

I went through the rest of the appointment chugging water and talking to the doctor. Before we left the nurse stayed in the room with me while we waited for a bathroom to open up. She was very kind and was very patient with me. Once a bathroom opened up the nurse took me back to the bathroom and said “Okay sweetie let’s try this again. No pressure take your time” I said “okay” and went into the bathroom to try again. After 15 minutes of trying, I gave up and walked out and said: “It’s not happening is there another time I could come back?” She said, “Sure just make an appointment at the front counter before you leave”. On my way out I stopped at the counter and made the appointment. When I got to my car I got the urge to pee and I was so mad. All of that embarrassment and humiliation just to have to pee as soon as I leave the building.

Hilariously aggravating experience, I’ve done almost the same thing! It really was embarrassing to tell a stranger that I couldn’t pee, especially when that was what they needed me to do for them to do their job. I’m glad most medical professionals are kind and understanding, though, they probably have many people unable to pee at their appointments, (probably more than we’d think). These people deal with everything from shy peeing to fainting at the sight of needles, blood, et cetera, and the unmentionable on top of that.

I can relate to this because I have had to pee in a cup before and I also couldn’t so I was just waiting in the bathroom until I could and it was awful because I just cant be on demand most of the time I have to drink a lot of fluids to be able to do that. It pretty stupid because the nurses are probably like what the heck is going on in there like why cant she pee in the cup it shouldn’t be that hard.

Just to clarify D, you are not alone. I pee like crazy everyday. But man once I hit that doctors office I can not go for some reason! It is soon embarrassing, but honestly everyone forgets about it once you leave. They probably deal with more embarrassing stuff through the day anyway, they probably forgot all about you not being able to pee once you left!

I know exactly how you feel! I can relate to this story so so much because I have been put into situations like this too and it has made me so stressed! I like how you were confident enough to tell the doctor that you couldn’t go it really adds to the story and people who don’t know you that well get to see how confident you are. I also like how you ended the story too, it adds to that, “ugh, of course,” feeling throughout the whole story.
