The Importance of Communication

As human beings, communication is an extremely important part of our life. As humans have evolved throughout the centuries, communication has evolved with them, while some forms have become obsolete. In the current day society that we live in, some of the most common forms of communication can be accessed through cellphones and telephones. When you are not talking to someone face to face, the easiest way to communicate with them is usually to text them or to make a phone call. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to these two forms, but the age old question remains: What are the advantages and disadvantages of texting and talking?

Texting is probably the easiest and most convenient and casual form of communication, but it certainly has it’s disadvantages. When receiving a text message, there is not the same sense of urgency to respond that a phone call has. After receiving the message, you can answer it whenever you feel like it, whereas if you are talking on the phone and someone poses a question to you, you usually have to answer it on the spot. Texting may be very convenient, but it is looked down upon when it comes to professionalism. If you are an extremely lazy person, like me, texting will be your best friend, but unfortunately you do not want to be viewed as “lazy” when it comes to your professional life. Texting is great for casual conversations with friends and family members, but it is not that great when it comes to your career.

Phone calls are probably the most universal and professional form of communication, but just like texting has it’s disadvantages. Phone calls have been around for a long time, and part of what makes it great is that it’s just like talking to someone, but that person can be hundreds of miles away from you. No one currently alive remembers a time before telephones were invented, so everyone should know how to use one. Since texting is still relatively “new”, certain generations are not as familiar with texting as the younger generations, so phone calls are sometimes the only way to communicate with those people. Phone calls are also viewed as being more professional than texting, so rarely will texting people be “okay” professionally speaking. Phone calls are definitely less convenient than texting, but are a more professional form of communication.

As people, including myself, become adults and begin careers, they will definitely find themselves talking on the phone more often. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I have not made as many phone calls as I have sent text messages. I am sure that I will not be the only one who realizes that this all changes as you begin to focus on your career. Texting is the most casual and convenient form of communication, while phone calls are a more professional form of communication.
