Yin & Yang of Social Media

Social Media has grown over the years, each year getting even better. Some people think this is a new start to life and how we will live, while others think its the start to losing touch of reality, and affecting people’s mental health more and more. The more people that buy the new technologies and giving in to all the social media play, the more we have to deal with them innovating more ideas, and products.

Dealing with social media in the present times is so much more confusing, with all the new ideas, technologies, platforms, apps, there is no way to really know what is revealed, created or even safe on social media. While back when it just started with platforms as small and reminiscent as MySpace, and even Friendster were even hard to learn about or get the hang of. Learning certain aspects of the app, or algorithms to keep up with all the changes and updates can be very overwhelming for most people, especially elderly people who already struggle with using their hands, or even talking. People think the new technology and social media coming out is more sustainable and better, but it is just confusing and not a necessity for most people at all.

Social Media can take away from the reality of the world, Making you feeling lonely, unhappy, maybe even ruining your mental health. Most people on social media that are famous are models or just very “perfect”, which leads other people to compares themselves and their lives to these rich, unrealistic people, making you feel bad about yourself. Social Media is like walking on eggshells, because you never really know what you will see, or if your information is truly safe on certain platforms or apps. The addiction to phones, games, apps, social media, etc, is growing in people the more they involve themselves with it. Especially in young kids it can became a problem where all they do is stay inside and play games or watch tv, which can also be a health issue because they aren’t getting exercise, fresh air, healthy food, etc. Not having temperance and knowing when to stop when it comes to social media, is something a lot of people struggle with because they are addicted.

When putting important information on the internet or on different platforms you need to be cautious, you never know what is real or fake on social media anymore which is also something to watch out for. People love to take advantage of vulnerable and tongue-tied people on social media, especially elderly people who don’t understand the new products or how to work the new technology. Some people target elderly people most because they are the most trusting and aren’t usually familiar with all the different scamming techniques which can put them in a spot of losing a lot of money and possibly not getting it back. Social media can be a very intimidating thing, there is so much that you can do, see, make, share, spread, and anything on social media that most things are out of your control if something does happen. Staying vigilant and cautious about what your sharing or where your buying from is a very important thing while surfing on social media.

Social Media has brought good and bad to the lives of people. The good social media can do is for school, new technology to help, learning about certain things, but it can also be a bad place where you can see or find anything you could ever think of. Social Media can make you lose the reality of the world, only worrying about your phone, or your Xbox and friends on it. Kids aren’t playing outside anymore, no more sports, no family time which is why it can be very controversial.
