Text and Call

Texting and Calling both have many advantages and disadvantages, but their main point is communication. Some advantages of voice calls is they are great for having detailed conversations and getting recipients to respond immediately. As you’ll be hearing someone’s voice, you can be 100% sure that the other person is present and paying attention to what you have to say. Some advantages for texting is the instant connection, images and videos are easily sharable, and it’s easy to track messages too.

Some of the disadvantages to calling are the lack of record, as it makes things more difficult to reference. Some other disadvantages are interruption, time commitment, and social anxiety. A call can easily be interupted, and ruin the conversation you were having, and sometimes people are busy and don’t have enough time to call, and some people find discomfort in calling, as it hits a trigger.  Some of the disadvantages to texting is the simple lack of emotion. You cannot ever tell the way someone is feeling, how they mean a text, or the true intention of the message. This creates confusion and miscommunication, all from a text.

In my personal life, calling is the best option for me. When I have to call out of work, it’s easiest to do so via call. If I was to text my boss to call out of work, it would seem unprofessional and immature. The major difference between texting and calling is that one is more real and immediate, while the other is emotionless and can be delayed. Whether it be my family or my work boss, I notice that calling forces conversation and makes you use your real voice.

I think that the expectations for texting or calling should only be changed in certain situations for emerging adults, like myself. The more professional thing to do is to call as an adult, and I believe that’s how it should be. If someone makes plans or cancels them, it is the most respectful to call and communicate that rather than text. Texting is a great way communicate, and is great for adding in detail that can be missed on call, however, expectations for texting are high and most people my age or below struggle with that.

In conclusion, calling is a much better way to communicate, rather than texting, after evaluating the pros and cons of both. Calls are great for having detailed conversations and getting recipients to respond immediately. As you’ll be hearing someone’s voice, you can be 100% sure that the other person is present and paying attention to what you have to say.  Another good thing about calling is that the emotions and tone are heard and felt by the other person. My stance is that calling is better than texting, and is far more professional.
