Data Beta

I plan on pursuing a career as an architect so the article “Can data centres ever be well-designed?” written by Ben Dreith is relevant to my future career. I’m also interested in learning about current problems in a career field I hope to be a part of. Architects create more than just the look of the building; it’s designed for purpose, functionality, as well as fitting it into the environment. Companies building data centres have faced criticism from the public due to the space and electricity taken by data centres.

The demand for ai is growing therefore there are many new data centres being built though they are built entirely around the technical needs leaving it lacking in design as well as space efficiency. AI data centres are growing in numbers which is making the space they take up become a genuine problem. The construction of data centres should be done in consideration of the surrounding area where it meets its needs as well as the environment’s.

This matters because the growth of AI is beginning to affect people and the continued construction of data centres only adds to the problem. As more data centres are built they use lots of land and electricity while having poor design architects should help improve these designs and mitigate issues with data centres. If data centres are continued to be built without the consideration of how it affects those living nearby, it will become a major problem.

This article has made me think about architecture a little differently because data centres aren’t the same as typical buildings due to them being based around hosting servers instead of people. This shows how the environment and community around buildings must be considered because of such problems with space, electricity, and public disapproval presented by data centers. This has made me think more and take a further look at things seeing how they fit into the environment around them.
