Is graffiti art??

Should graffiti be considered art or not? Yes it should be recognized as art even though alot of the time it is done on private property. but it is still a person using their creativity to create art. Therefore graffiti should be considered art.

The definition of art is when people use their creativity and skill to create something like painting or sculpting. Art has been around for at least 75,000 years or so and it has evolved over time. Graffiti was created in the early 60’s and is almost everywhere even though its illegal to do graffiti. some of the most earliest form of graffiti is name tagging which is when a person graffitis their name in a very artistic way.

My opinion is that graffiti should be recognized more as a form of art but i also think that graffiting property that isn’t yours and you didn’t get premission to do it is pretty bad and should stay illegal “If it wasn’t for the fact that most graffiti is placed on private property without the owner’s permission, then it might be more recognized as a legitimate form of art” (Dolan) the quote shows how alot of graffiti is on private property and that if it wasen’t it would be recognized as a legitamate form of art another great example of this is “Although its artistic merits can’t be denied, graffiti is still in fact a form of vandalism. Artists tag both public and private property, which becomes costly for taxpayers and business and property owners”(source 4) it also talks about how people who graffiti do it on private property and public property which makes the owner have to clean it up or to get someone else to clean it up.

But graffiti should still be considered a form of art. since its someone using their creativity to create something beautiful and unique even though most of the time its done on private property. a great example of this “Stowers explains that graffiti cannot be disregarded because of its location and illegality.The manner in which graffiti art is executed is the only obstacle it faces in being considered an art form” (source 3) the quote explains how graffiti shouldn’t be disregarded because of where the graffiti is done and that it should still be considered art. is it good to do? no definately not unless they do it legally by getting the owners permission first.

another reason graffiti can be art is that its gaining recognition by the public as a form of art and graffiti is even being put into gallaries “after years of gaining recognition by the art community, graffiti art has been shown in various galleries in New York and London, and artists are often commissioned to do legal murals and other work for art shows.” (source 3) the quote shows how graffiti is starting to be more recognized as a form of art. people who do graffiti are also getting comissioned to do some graffiti on buildings which is a good way to tell that graffiti is being recognized as a form of art instead of just a crime.

in conclusion graffiti is both good and bad in the art commmunity but it is still a form of art and should be recognized as such even if its illegal.
