In The Ingredients by Jason Reynolds the author tried to use the creativity and indecisiveness of kids to show how people can be united in a diverse space. Although they are consistently making remarks towards  each other, you can tell that they have a close bond. The author represents that time of the summer as a break from reality and a time for enjoyment and shenanigans. This is shown throughout, “They don’t bring towels or any extra garments. The way they see it, one of the best parts about the pool is the wet walk home.” They are worry free just being true to themselves, the way it should be.

This compares to the way me and my friends are indecisive. Well spend all day making a plan to do something, just to end up back at the house watching our favorite show. These kids dreamt up all kinds of sandwiches, and ended up at Flaco’s with a bowl of cereal, “The sound of the refrigerator door, unsticking, resticking. And then Flaco returns from the kitchen with four bowls, a box of cereal, and a half gallon of milk.” We make fun of each other in a playful light-hearted way that compares to how the kids do in this short story.

I really love the idea that you think Reynolds tried to show unity in a diverse space. I can definitely relate to being indecisive with your friends and always ending up back at home. By saying " They are worry free just being true to themselves, the way it should be." many people would think that having a summer experience like that is great, but saying "the way life should be" seems a bit subjective. Good ideas!

I really like how you used the term break from reality because I can really see that when it is summer time and I'm with my friends. I think that a lot of people can relate to the fact of being worry free in the summer. I also think that a lot of people can relate to having all these big plans for summer but end up at home not doing much. You mention being home and watching your favorite show, what is the show you would be watching on these days.

I really liked how you portrayed the spirit of the author. When you used the example, "not bringing towels or any extra garments," you made a parallel to your and your friends' day.

The way you described your day with your friends and how you ended up doing something unexpected reminds me of my friends and me. We are also very indecisive and always do something completely different than what we planned. I love how it made me think about how much time I spend overthinking plans.

I feel like this really connects when we get older, we slowly stop being as indecisive and spontaneous. It is also connected with how easily it is to overplan and overthink things, and all of a sudden, it's fun anymore.

Do you think it's still possible to have a carefree and spontaneous attitude as we get older?
