	I agree, the government rejecting immigrants relates to people not accepting the immigrants in my book, many people got judged and even Bruno got into a fight with an American kid because the kid didn't accept him. the government disagreeing with this is a good example of immigrants not getting good treatment. 3 days ago By crsim... Yes, Sol does go through these things, she doesn't know who she needs to be for her family and for herself. We even see at one point in the book when an American kid fought Bruno, because Bruno was Mexican. 	In my book “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents” By Julia Alvarez, the first section focuses on the girls' adult lives and their return to the Dominican Republic, while the second section looks back to when they were younger and had just moved to New York. The first part showed more of them dealing with struggles at work and in marriage. While the second shows the girls struggling to fit in socially, in this part of the book, they struggle with a lot of bullying. And in the last part, it talks about their lives before they moved out of the Dominican Republic and how they will never be able to go back to that life. The problem is the isolation they feel, so if people started accomodating to immigrants instead of expecting them to be just like them, then they would probably be more comfortable to open up and not question wether they belong. This fits how Yolanda feels about not fitting in anywhere she goes, since most of her family stayed back in the Dominican Republic. Natasha is a practical, science loving girl whose family is being deported back to Jamaica. She doesn’t believe in fate or love–she believes in facts and logic. Natasha is spending her last day in New York trying to find a way to stop her family’s transportation. Daniel is a Korean American boy whose parents immigrated from South Korea. His parents want hom to become a doctor, but Daniel secretly wants to be a poet. Natasha is trying to save her family, Daniel has an important college interview that could decide his future. Natasha and Daniel meet by chance in New York City. Daniel instantly feels a connection and believes it’s fate. Natasha doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but Daniel challenges her to spend the day together to see if he can make her fall in love with him using science. The character Natasha Kingsley knows she is different from the people around her because of the way she thinks about life and love, which is completely different from her peers. While Daniel believes in fate and destiny, Natasha has her roots in science and facts. As the day goes on, Natasha and Daniel spend more time together, visiting different places around the city and having deep conversations about their lives, families, and beliefs. Even though Natasha is determined to stay logical and not get emotionally attached, she slowly begins to feel something for Daniel. Daniel, on the other hand, becomes even more convinced that their meeting is not just a coincidence but something meant to happen. Natasha continues her mission to stop her family's deportation, holding onto the hope that something will change. At the same time, Daniel struggles with the pressure from his parents and begins to question whether he should follow his own dreams instead of the chosen path from his parents. Natasha finally reveals that her family is being deported that night to Daniel, and it creates tension between the two, as Daniel feels hurt that she didn’t tell him sooner, and Natasha is overwhelmed by the reality of her situation. Their time together begins to change both of them. Natasha starts to question whether love and fate could be real, while Daniel begins to confront the pressures his parents have placed on him and what he truly wants for his future. They form a strong, emotional bond. As Natasha’s deportation becomes unavoidable, the hope that things could work out starts to fade. Daniel, who has been trying to prove that love can change fate, realizes that he can’t fix everything. Despite their quick connection, they’re forced to face the reality of Natasha having to return to Jamaica with her family. At the airport, their goodbye is painful and unresolved. Both of them are changed by the experience of meeting each other. Natasha, who didn’t believe in love, had felt it for the first time. Daniel, who believed love could solve anything, learns that life is more complicated than that. After Natasha leaves, Daniel struggles to move on but eventually begins to accept what happened. He chooses to pursue writing and poetry instead of following the path that his parents had planned, showing how Natasha influenced him to be more true to himself. By the end of the book, further into the future by a few years, Natasha and Daniel meet again in New York City by chance. The biggest barrier for Natasha that would need to change is the rigid immigration system. For her to succeed and feel accepted into the country she's known for most of her years is that the system would need to be more flexible, humane, and willing to consider individual circumstances, “She glances up at me again but shows no sign that she recognizes me, even though I've been here every day for the last week. To her I'm just another anonymous face, another applicant, another someone who wants something from America.” (Yoon 8). The system treats people in a similar circumstance to Natasha more like numbers than individuals. The people and system do not recognize Natasha as a unique person with her own story and struggles. She's just another anonymous face. For her to succeed and feel accepted into the country she's known for most of her years is that the system would need to be more flexible, humane, and willing to consider individual circumstances. Without this pressure, she would have the chance to build a stable future in the U.S. and fully pursue her goals. In the TedTalk "What's missing from the American Immigrant narrative," Gutierrez faces the same barriers as Natasha, “--I mean, we were in America, and so as a child, this made me have these crazy, ambitious, and elaborate dreams for what my future could look like. But the ways in which the world sees immigrants, it affects more than just the narratives in which they live. It also impacts the ways laws and systems can affect communities, families and individuals. I know this firsthand, because these laws and systems, well, they broke up my family, and led my parents to return to Mexico…Despite being American citizens, we both felt defeated by what we had always known to be the land of opportunity.” (Gutierrez). One of the things people could do to help people who aren’t from the country or are children of immigrants is to just try to be more accepting of those different from them, unfortunately a lot of people have a hard time with that. In Junot Díaz’s book The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Oscar’s sister has a problem with being bullied earlier in her life because of her appearance, “...they called me Blacula, and the morenos, they didn’t know what to say: they just called me devil-b##ch” (Díaz 54). Nastasha isolates herself for the sake of keeping her goals of protecting her family the only thing in her mind and never lets herself deviate from that goal. In the beginning of the book, Natasha relies on being emotionally independent. She trusts in logic, science, and in herself rather than others because it makes her feel safer and helps her cope and protect her from being vulnerable, “Still. You couldn't fault her. Not really. My father had been dreaming his life away for years. He lived in those plays instead of the real world. He still does. My mother didn't have time for dreaming anymore. Neither do I.” (Yoon 208). By the end of the book, her new connection with Daniel shows her that relationships can bring meaning and joy, even if they're temporary, being open to others doesn't make her weak, and emotions are just as real and important as logic. She doesn’t benefit from being alone, it only protects her, not fulfills her. In the TedTalk "Why children of immigrants experience guilt--ans strategies to cope," Sahaj Kaur Kohli explains that when a child of an immigrant grows up with different opportunities and the ability to grow, they experience guilt because their family wasn't able to have access to said opportunities, “Many children of immigrants feel a chronic sense of guilt for letting their parents down, for not being enough…for seeming ungrateful. There's also this sense of a thriver's guilt or this guilt for growing, healing, accessing resources and opportunities that maybe our parents didn't have or our family and other parts of the world don't have access to. So many children of immigrants may have grown up being responsible for their parents as well.” (Kohli). Natasha feels responsible for protecting her family, and doesn't allow herself to reach out and connect with others for the sake of coping with her vulneralbility. 2 months ago By jgust... In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz, the main character, Oscar, is often left by himself. Depending on where you are in the book, this is good or bad. Near the beginning of the book, when he’s younger, he benefits from being alone as it lets him write his novels uninterrupted, “...Nene Inca, let him be. Allowed him to sit in the back of the house as long as he wanted, didn’t insist that he should be ‘out in the world’” (Díaz 31). But later in the book when Oscar is older and left by himself, his thoughts turn dark and he tries hurting himself, “Reviewing his miserable life. 	In the book "Brighter Than the Sun" written by Daniel Aleman, the story is about a teenage girl named Sol who lives in Tijuana, Mexico. However, she crosses the border every day to go to school in San Diego. After her mom dies, her family faces a lot of problems in keeping their restaurant afloat. Since Sol is the only citizen in her family, she feels a lot of pressure in helping her family financially. Eventually, she finds a job in San Diego and stays at her friend's family during the week so she can work and go to school easily. This poses a problem for her because she feels guilty about leaving her family in Tijuana. Throughout this part of the book, Sol tries her best to balance her work and school with helping her family financially, yet she dreams of going to college. The pressure on Sol starts to build up even more. She starts spending more time in San Diego at work and school, and she starts feeling more and more removed from her family in Tijuana. At the same time, she starts thinking more seriously about her future and whether she should pursue college or help her family as much as she can. Her relationships with the people in her life also start to get more complicated as she tries to come to terms with her guilt and grief over her mother's death. Sol also starts realizing that it is not as easy as she thought it would be to have two different worlds at the same time. This part of the book mostly illustrates her inner conflict about her dreams and her family. Sol is at the highest point of pressure to make a definite decision about her future. Her struggle to balance the needs of her family in Tijuana with the desire to make a life for herself in San Diego is drastically increased by the new problems that arise with her family and their restaurant. Sol learns that she cannot continue to live two different lives without making some sacrifices. She begins to understand that making a life for herself, such as attending college, does not mean that she is abandoning her life with her family, but rather that she is doing something that will help her family in the long run. At the end of the book, Sol makes a decision that represents her love and commitment to her family and her desire to make a better life for herself, showing how much she has grown and accepted who she is, caught between two worlds. In Brighter Than the Sun by Daniel Aleman, stereotypes are indeed present in the character of Sol because of where she is from. The reason this book has stereotypes is because Sol lives in Tijuana but goes to school and works in the United States in the city of San Diego. When she goes to school, she feels like she does not quite fit in because the students do not know what her life is like crossing the border every day. They make judgments about her life without really understanding the reality. On the other hand, stereotypes can be seen in the character of Sol because she has judgments about life in the United States. At the beginning of the book, she believes the United States has more opportunities compared to Tijuana. However, as the book goes on, she begins to understand that this is not necessarily true. “In the cafeteria, I go back to being silent most of the time. They all try-especially Ari, Olivia, and Camila…I can't find a way to act bright, or happy or to lower my walls.”(Aleman 199) 3 weeks ago By gpoul... In North of Happy by Adi Alsaid, Carlos doesn’t really deal with stereotypes about being from Mexico; because he is rich and lives a very privileged life, which goes against a lot of common stereotypes. Instead, the story forces more on his personal struggles and figuring out who he wants to become. When he comes to America, he does have some ideas about what life there will be like, especially thinking it will give him more freedom and independence. But as he spends more time there, he realizes that life isn’t perfect anywhere and that people in America have their own problems too, which helps him see things in a more realistic way. "I thought leaving would fix everything, like there was something better waiting for me somewhere else." (239, Alsaid) 2 months ago By rbabb... vrigoischenet26: In my book Strike Zone by Mike Lupica there is a family that is from the Dominican Republic. Nick is the main character, and he plays baseball. Nick is afraid of being deported because his parents are not here legally. The only thing that is stopping the main character from pursuing what he would like to do is the fact that his family is illegal and not supposed to be in the United States. Nick's parents are also not legal citizens so they are afraid of walking or being around people and work off their kids because they are legal. Although he could be stopped at any time by an officer and could possibly be deported. He is nervous of running into ICE, “Nick hadn’t heard of any further ICE raids in the South Bronx, and there was no sight of the ICE Man since that night.”(Lupica 100). This quote shows that he is afraid of being deported and he fears that he can not do anything because he does not want to run into any ICE agents.
