A part of conventional society that I would like to give up is social media. I feel like social media can be addictive and unhealthy for teens because I could spend hours just scrolling through reels. I like how McCandless gave up everything to connect with nature and live life to the fullest. I feel like being social or worrying too much about the stressors of life can take that peace away. Which is why I would get rid of social media.
What I think are some of the benefits of giving up social media would be that I would be able to reconnect with nature, my hobbies, friends, and family, and myself. I would be able to discover who I am without the need to scroll on Instagram, I’d be able to see the world around me with different eyes; I’d see the world without everyone shoving their opinions down my throat. I would also be able to get rid of the anxiety and stress that social media can bring. I wouldn’t have to compare myself to others, and I would be able to be more authentic. I think that some downsides of getting rid of social media are that I would lose connecting with friends and family that I dont see all the time. I wouldn’t really be able to stay in touch or see what's going on in their lives, which could make me isolated and slip away from my connections. I would also lose being informed of events or what is happening with my favorite musicians.
I’m not sure that I would be able to get rid of social media in my high school setting because that is relevant to high schoolers, so having them all talk about it would make me feel alone and tempted to join again. I feel likecouldn’t’yt do it alone because I have always been sociable, and being the only one not part of social media in my friend and family group would make me go crazy. I don’t think that I would fit into society if I gave up social media because it is so popular and widely used that if I gave it up, I feel like I would be judged for my decision.
I like how when you talked about specific events happening in the world, you went to music. I was expecting something more controversial like the political state of the world or drama that might be going on but this pleasantly surprised me. It showed me something you really cared about that I wouldn't have gotten if you made it vague and just said, "I would lose being informed of events or what's happening in the world." My broad reaction to this is that you look at the glass half full. With something you easily could've made negative, you instead brought it into your own interests and what matters to you. Although you said you wouldn't be able to do this in a high school setting because you believe you would be pressured to fall back into it, would you try?
I feel the same way. Social media can be fun, but it’s also really distracting and can make me feel stressed or like anxious. I like the idea of getting rid of it to focus more on myself, my hobbies, and the people around me. kind of like how McCandless wanted to live more freely. Do you think you could give up social media if you tried for a week and if you succeed could you go longer?
I agree with social media being addictive and constantly comparing yourself with others. I like how you explained the positive and the negative to social media. Keeping in contact with friends without social media could be pretty hard and knowing about certain events you are interested in. If most people were willing to stop using social media, would you?
