What I would like to give up is the expectations everyone has on each other as a society and the control the government has on us like taxes and politics and also technology. I never understood why everyone had such high expectations for each other when we are all working very hard to earn the same thing. The benefits of getting rid of society's expectations would be that we would all be uniquely ourselves without trying to conform to social beliefs; it would also allow for healthier relationships and personal growth and fulfillment. But a drawback would be people would stop cooperating because social norms make people act in less selfish ways which is very important for a society. Also getting rid of the control the government has will bring less spending and lower taxes because when people spend less that will lower the taxes on people and businesses. But a drawback would be it might cause conflict and arguments among people because people believe the government provides functions to maintain law and order and social stability. Limiting technology creates less waste which makes the earth healthier and decreases the toll on the environment. But a drawback is people are going to have to fill the roles of technology which might be challenging because people have relied so much on technology. I would have to go off the grid because I would get tempted by technology and social expectations and government. I think if i were to live off the grid I wouldn't care about my spot into the society and my relationships with people.
I like how you really went into detail when describing the positives of the government. You clearly stated all of the things that a loss of government would affect and how they would have to be dealt with. This made me realize how much we actually do rely on the government for stability and how the country operates. I had never thought about it in any other way and this made me really think of the government as a whole, not just a control system. I wonder if there is another way stability could happen without it being complete control.
I like that you discussed the pros and cons of what you are giving up in depth. You don't combine both expectations and the government because they have different pros and cons, which I found very nice. I connect with this because society puts expectations on all of us, and you talking about it made me realize how much I have been impacted by these expectations and how if we limit or get rid of these expectations, I could be more of who I am without the government. To put this into a broader context, are there any other ways that we have been conformed or that have expectations for us that we should get rid of? The government definitely has expectations for us, but there might be more that we aren't super aware of. As well as getting rid of other things that do harm to the environment besides phones. Would you ever go off the grid and try to get rid of, or at least limit, these things that you have discussed? What would really push you into getting rid of this?
