In Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, he details how Chris McCandless gives up things that many people rely on such as money and any other small items he has. Something conventional I would give up is social media. Just like most of the things McCandless gave up, social media is not an extremely useful thing that is needed every day. It causes unnecessary stress and unrealistic standards. Giving up social media will definitely prove difficult because it is such a big part of my life. Every day, I scroll through TikTok for hours and similarly with Instagram.

The benefits of giving up social media would be more free time, less stress, and overall a better mental health. I wouldn't spend mindless hours scrolling through pointless videos, I wouldn’t be worried that my time wasted would have been spent better by doing school work. It would help mental health by removing one of the main issues of insecurity, social media. I would definitely be looked at weirdly by other people and would feel a bit disconnected. One of my (and others’) main ways of communicating to others is through Instagram or Snapchat, so to get rid of that would prove to be lonely.

I think you make a really great point about how giving up social media is truly difficult. Especially in today's day, it's a part of modern life. I like how you mentioned the mental health benefits, like reducing insecurity. I feel like that is very overlooked when everyone seems to be caught up in social media.

I can really relate to your thoughts about social media. I also think it's so hard to imagine my life without it, but I've also noticed it seems to make my life toxic in a way. I wonder how much more meaningful relationships would be without social media.

This really brings up the bigger idea of how technology shapes our relationships and our everyday lives, expectations of society now.

I wonder if there is a true balance of social media, if there is a way to use it mindfully without it taking over.

I understand why you believe you would be disconnected from society without social media, especially since it has become a consistent form of communication. Social media’s unrealistic content has made me insecure and behind in life, when in reality, I should be focusing on my goals, not the “ideals” of society.

It seems that many people are aware of the damage that social media does to our mental health. Why do you think we choose to continue to overuse social media, when it does more harm than good?

I like how you said how social media brings unnecessary stress which I see every day through social media. I also can relate to how scrolling on TikTok and Instagram gives me that stress about not using my time wisely when I could easily go and do other things like school work. I feel that everyone, especially high school students, could benefit from giving up social media because then kids would be more on task and be passing more classes. Do you think if you tried giving up social media it would make you want to get it back quickly or do you think you could spend the time off of it.
