In the short story titled “How a penny made me feel like a millionaire”, author Tania Luna discusses a time when she was poor, living in America as a refugee from Ukraine. Luna mentions eating a pizza that was delivered to the wrong home, and enjoying every bite of it. She says “everyone’s upset. But the pizza is delicious” (Luna). Luna’s family did not have money to pay for the pizza that was not for them, but she was able to enjoy her very first pizza. The character Sol in the novel Brighter Than the Sun by Daniel Aleman also deals with poverty within her family. Sol has to travel from Mexico to America to make money in order to keep the family restaurant open. When working at the nearly empty restaurant, Sol says “...I start to feel longing for what this place once was--and for what I know it can become one we’ve rescued it” (Aleman 93). Sol does not have money to save her family’s restaurant, but she does what she can to try and save it.

The Book "The Burning Tigris" does not have main characters, but there are many repeating characters which appear in the book. One important man is Ohannes Chatschumian who is a Theology student from Armenia. The introductory sentence tells us his financial status, "Chatschumian, a brilliant but penniless graduate student, had been studying theology for the past several years at the University of Leipzig, where he was sent, with the help of some patrons, from his native town of Elizavetpol in Russian Armenia." (Balakian 12).
In the book, "how the Garcia girls lost their accents" by Julia Alvarez, Yolanda is giving back round information about her family and what their typical life looks like. She talks about details on what her family looks like and how they act. It seems as if Yolanda's family isn't super poor but isn't wealthy. She talks about their clothes and how they are wearing brightly colored dresses. I would consider her middle class because they talk about how some of her family is designer and they seem to be comparing Yolanda to them all when they say, " In her designer pantsuit and frosted, blown- out hair, Lucinda looks like a Dominican Magazine model, a look that has always made Yolanda think of call girls" (Alvarez 5). This quotes shows how her other family like her cousins, has decent money and it seems as if Yolanda is a little jealous and compares herself, but especially her family compares herself to them.
In the Novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" By Junot Díaz. Oscars family is pretty wealthy and are from the Dominican, "Because in house days he was (still) a 'normal' DOminican boy".(Diaz 11)
In "North of Happy'' by Adi Alsaid, he grows up in an upper middle class family in Mexico. Though they aren't lavished in fancy things. He is able to take enough money to go to America and survive comfortably. If Adi didn't run from home he could have taken over the family business and grown some serious wealth. But he chose to follow in his brothers steps and explore the world."I serve myself a plate... not wanting to eat in my room, I take my plate and a chair out onto the breezeway overlooking the parking lot... My brother. He would have appreciated.. my escape from home."(Alsaid 40-41)
In the book" The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" By Junot Díaz, its implied that Ocsar's family is lower class. the chapter title "Ghetto Nerd at the End of the World" (pg. 11) implies he lives in a bad part of town.
In the book "Black Enough" Edited By Ibi Zoboi the first story "Half A Moon" By Renee Watson, it's stated that she and her mother are struggling "I have to work, have to help out at home, because mom can't take care of the bills alone." (Watson 2)
My Response: My Response: in my book Out Of Nowhere by Marina Padian Tom Bouchard is a great student and a great soccer player and has a hot girlfriend but he is a bad diction maker and is not always doing the right things and he deal with lots and lots of racial diversity
Saeed mentions how over in Somalia they don't wear cleats in soccer for example “yeah kenya?he don't wear shoes, one guy committed from the back.”(pg82)
In my novel, The Poet X, by Elizabeth Acevedo, the main character does not directly mention her family's financial status. However it can be inferred that she is part of a lower income family because she lives in Harlem, New York, which historically and currently is majority low-income families. For example the text reads, “The summer is made for stoop-sitting/ And since it’s the last weeks before school starts,/ Harlem is opening its eyes to September.” (Acevedo 3). This quote exemplifies that Xiomara is from Harlem, and therefore she is likely from a lower income family, and that’s without mentioning that she is also the daughter of a family of immigrants.
caustin27: How does not fitting in affect Oscar? Does he have any friends? Who are his friends if he does have any? If he does not have any friends, does he reflect on that often?
jdixon27: That is interesting that there is a contrast between the wealthy and the poor. Do you have a quote from your book that supports this idea?
jpomerleau27: You said "The story follows a modern girl who is reincarnated into a fantasy world as the young daughter of a feared, cold-blooded emperor known as a tyrant. Everyone in the empire expects her to be ignored, abused, or killed—because the emperor is notorious for eliminating even his own family"
What is the title of the book you are reading and the author? Can you tell me about who may be poor or wealthy in this family?
