Learning From My Mistakes

I agree with Duke’s statement because life is full of mistakes and problems, but it’s a chance for you to do better. Many opportunities can make or break you. Mistakes are a part of life, learning from your mistakes is what will open opportunities. A mistake can be as little as not bringing a pencil to class, you can learn from that mistake and be prepared for the next class. Learning from the mistakes you make will help shape you into the person you become.

When I was in seventh grade I was a problem student, I didn’t listen, I talked back, I didn’t do my work, I would do what I wanted without a care in the world. When seventh grade was coming to an end I had a meeting with all of my teachers and my principal, they had told me that I would not pass the seventh grade if I didn’t get my grades up. I had fooled around and started so many problems for myself I thought I would never succeed. Taking those thoughts in on how bad I messed up and how important school really was I took this opportunity and did better. Those problems opened opportunities for me. During the many mistakes I made in school, I was able to overcome the downfalls and do better. The mistakes I made and problems that occurred helped open bigger opportunities for me in the future.

Problems occur for everyone but I think my mother went through a lot of problems in her life. She has always had a problem in life, bad luck I would call it. She was always doing her best to make sure my sister and I were happy, despite being discouraged and knocked down so much she never gave up, eventually she did give up. The problems that she caused for all our family throughout many years did a lot of damage, she learned from her mistakes and those mistakes opened opportunities for her. As Duke mentioned, “A problem is a chance for you to do your best.” (Duke Ellington). She took her problems and faced them with the best she had. The meaning of Duke’s statement shows that you can turn a bad situation into a good one as long as you try.

All of these problems in life have given me opportunities to do better and learn from my mistakes. I agree with Duke’s statement and I hope that others would agree because you can always come up from being down and you can always turn your life around. I believe in second chances and I think that most people do better with that second chance then they would’ve had with that first chance.
