Easy to Get Lost

The internet can be a wonderful place for anyone, no matter what you are looking for you are pretty much guaranteed to find it. For a lot of people, they want a place where they can see what their family may be doing, they can see updates on their favorite celebrities, they can ask a group of people a very specific question to see common issues, similar to a forum, and they can also scroll through and kill time. That’s what I think of when I think of a social media platform, and while each platform is designed a little differently from each other, they still all have the same basic concept, swipe to see the next thing, then the next, then the next, and it goes on seemingly forever, and it keeps people distracted until they don’t need to be. That’s all good and fine if you only do it for an hour or two a day, three hours tops, when you get to four or even five hours, it becomes a waste of time.

Social media is an easy place to get lost in, one scroll and there is almost no going back. This isn’t always a bad thing when you’re just trying to distract yourself for a couple of minutes here or there, but much more than that and it turns into time that could be used doing something else more productive. I say this because most people when they are on social media, they aren’t looking at informative videos, or educating themselves, they are watching whatever they want, most of the time it’s either funny videos, memes, reviews, etc. All small simple things that don’t give you anything useful, it’s just there for people to be entertained. Before social media, it was video games, before video games it was television, before television it was radio, and so on, all things that are made for entertainment, and for the most part that’s all people get out of it. So all they are doing is just wasting time, time that most people don’t have because this or that could be done, but they choose to use social media instead. Even if they have nothing that needs to be done they’ll still choose to waste a day on social media rather than going and doing something, or doing something more productive at home even.

I admit I am talking a lot of trash about social media for someone who uses it a lot. I try to not use it too much, but I do sometimes. I am not saying that it’s good or productive, but I am entertained and it does make time go by faster. I like watching videos, looking at memes, looking at updates in my family’s lives, chatting with friends, and so on, but I don’t let it control my life and I don’t have to be constantly looking at it all of the time. Social media isn’t all bad, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best thing ever either.

When it comes down to it social media isn’t necessarily a good use of time, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing. It just means that social media is under the same classification as video games and television, it’s a form of entertainment that isn’t going away any time soon. Eventually, it will slowly fade out like, listening to live radio stations, and watching live television stations have started to. Social media is good for killing time and that is it, if there is no time to kill then there is no need to use it.
