Graffiti is art. Art is people using their skills to express ideas. It shouldn’t be illegal, and it shouldn’t be considered unwelcoming. This is people’s form of art, and you can’t take that from them. Most businesses in cities have graffiti on their wall, and it draws attention and attracts people.
I don’t think graffiti is harming anything but people’s ability to worry about themselves. Grafitti is a form of art. “Graffiti has to be considered an art form. He makes a distinction between simple tags and more complicated pieces, stating that tags have little aesthetic appeal and probably should not be considered art. However, larger pieces require planning and imagination and contain artistic elements like color and composition.”(3 Dorman) Every piece of art takes planning and consideration to be done. More cities are hiring graffiti artists to create murals to recognize the value of this art.
A suggestion was made to keep this kind of painting not on all the walls, but on canvases. “Maybe we need to start at a very basic level and find a way to encourage the creation of graffiti art on paper or canvas, rather than walls.”(1 Dorman). Graffiti is not vandalism. Doing this is taking away from the creativity of graffiti and originality of it. They shouldn’t have to paint on canvases for it to be considered art.
In most places, you can’t buy spray paint unless you are 18. I understand having an age restriction on buying this product, but most artists find their flow way before the age of 18. “In some places, you can’t buy spray paint unless you’re over 18. Cans of spray paint are locked away in display cases.”(Dorman 3). This should not be illegal. Most artists find they enjoy art before the age of 18.
Removing this art is disrespectful to the graffiti community. “Maybe if some of the people behind the graffiti art were taken in hand and trained.”(Dorman 1) They don’t need to be trained because it’s all about the originality of it.
In conclusion, to all this, graffiti is art. It shouldn’t be taken down. It shouldn’t be illegal, or unwelcoming, or done on canvases. Art is everything.
