Social media apps like Instagram and tikok, are the reason why simple advetisments work so good on social media. The reason for this is because people on these social media apps who make the ads, use there data to find out what people like and personalize ads for specific people. This can be seen as a good thing, getting things that are personalized to you can ingage you more in social media than random ads that have nothing to do with your interests.
When scrolling on Instagram, TikTok, or watching YouTube, I see lots of ads about things that I am interested in. Its either something about car parts, or clothes that are very overpriced for what they are. An example of social media not following my algorithm is when a couple months ago I would see some ads following newer trends, especially when needohs where popular again, I would get ads on TikTok about a “sale” or even some rip off versions needohs. Needohs are these squishy cubes that people like to fidget with that became more popular again. These toys are sold out at mostly every store and are pretty hard to get, so any opprotunity that these people have to get one, they will take that chance, A little bit more recently on TikTok, ive been seeing lots of influencers promoting gambling apps and websites, which is more targeted to the people who are legally allowed to gamble and people who watch sports or mostly anything competitive. I have bought some things off of Instagram ads before, like a couple of shirts, some cool fishing stuff that was popular and even some parts from Uro Tuning for my car. all of these ads were targeted of course and taken from my data from all the stuff I’ve looked up and all of the reels I’ve watched to put these ads on my feed. I honestly like these types of ads, I feel like they could be useful expecially the car parts one.
There has been a couple of times were I have got ads for stuff I have never looked up or been interested in in my life. For an example, I keep getting these ads on YouTube about politics and other stuff I honestly could not care any less about. On the other hand, all the time when im talking to my friends or my family about something it will pop up on my Instagram feed, which can be a little creepy sometimes and does suprise me. these apps will make you feel like they know everything about you from these ads or videos you see pop up, but honestly, that’s not true at all. if I was looking at me from their point of view, I think they see me as some kid that just likes cars, car parts and clothes with cars on them. The social media apps most likey think this because of the things I look up and the videos that I spend more time watching.
In conclusion of this, my “real identity” is far more than what social media ads and videos I get on my feed. when looking at my “advertising Identity”, you can see it’s mostly cars and fishing videos when thats not even half of it. I do like cars but more in depth than that like building motors, and auto repairs, I also like legos and seeing people with big Lego sets I dream of having, and Instagram has no idea about those things. As I get older and my interests change, there are lots of things I dont even know about myself yet so how could a social media app know everything about me? Yes, social media can be accurate by putting things I like on my TikTok and Instagram, but those things dont represent me as a whole.
