Social media is full of numerous different networking platforms. Some platforms include Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter (X), VSCO, TikTok, and dating platforms. These platforms help people to connect, whether that is sharing culture, communicating, or expressing opinions/ideas, which can benefit people in more than one way. Personally, I feel that social media is helpful to people because it allows different perspectives and helps people stay connected.
Social media as a whole is useful when people are trying to connect to make plans, whether that be with family or friends. Personally, I don’t have all of my friends’ phone numbers, so I have to resort to Snapchat, which helps me stay connected to my friends and make plans when I am free. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram seem pointless, but in this generation, we see that they can help people by inspiring them to do what other people are doing. For example, there have been many gift ideas or Christmas party ideas that I have used or done for myself, friends, or family.
On the other side of this, social media can seem to be corrupting my generation and leading people to procrastinate. Procrastination is very common when people use social media because a lot of times they will use it as a distraction, which I think we are all guilty of. There have been many times when, instead of doing my homework or chores, I would sit there and scroll, which gets nothing done. When social media is used to avoid things such as homework, your job, or people, then social media can be seen as more of a tool for procrastination. Though social media is helpful when trying to find information, sometimes we can get distracted from what we were originally trying to do, and hold us back.
Overall, when social media is used incorrectly by procrastinating or as a distraction, then it might be frowned upon, but when people can use social media to communicate and to filter ideas, then people can really benefit from it.
