Sweet, Difficult Sounds connects to the story Black Nerd Problems in my book Black Enough because Shawn gets harassed “I know, dude. It’s funny how I can’t keep them off me. Hope you taking notes on that little phone of yours”(Giles 80) He faces harassment just as Nothukula faces bullying “One girl laughed, then clapped her hand over her mouth.”(Desta) they both face bullying or harassment.
Does your character have an antagonist or bully? If they do, how do they deal with them? If they don’t, is there anyone who is against them?
In my book, Americanized, by Sara Saedi my character doesn't have a bully. She is a teenager in high school and has an American best friend. She loves her and loves to do things with her and dress like her. From my book, "Izzy loved rings and wore one on every finger, so I quickly did the same." (Saedi 70)
In my book Black Enough by Ibi Zoboi the story Black Enough by Varian Johnson. similar to your character Cam wears new clothes and shoes in attempt to impress the girl he is interested in. "But I'm betting those new clothes and shoes have more to do with trying to impress Eileen Thompson's granddaughter than anything else." this shows how similar to your character mine also changes up there attire because of someone else.
in my book a land of permanent goodbyes by Atia Abawi I wouldnt say there is a bully but in a way there is and it would be Syria there country "it was the decisions made by those in their country and those outside Syria that brought them to this night"( pg 9)
In my Black Enough edited by Ibi Zoboi the story Half A Moon by Renee Watson. Similar to your character mine is affected by decisions made by a higher authority in which she has no say in. Raven is put into an uncomfortable situation after being placed in the same cabin as her half sister. "You will be in Cabin Three with Natasha and the Blue Campers." (Watson 6) This shows her being placed into the same cabin.
The main character Jende is an immigrant from Cameroon , he and his family moved to Harlem NY hoping for a better life. Jende gets a job as a chauffeur for the Lehman Brothers owned by Clark Edwards. His wife Neni is a college student and is in college to become a pharmacist. Jende works through the hardships of being an immigrant family hoping to find the “American Dream” in New York. The book mentions the financial hardship a lot too. The book slightly switches focus to the owner of Lehman Brothers. We read that Clark faces massive debt and falls into a hole of always working and becomes very absent from his family and wife. Neni ends up getting offered a job in the Hampton by the Edwards family as a housekeeper. Clark's wife Cindy turns to alcohol and painkillers due to her husband's absence, Neni ends up finding Cindy in that state and realizes she needs help. Jende is currently facing an ongoing immigration case that he seems to be struggling with since his lawyer keeps charging him little fees and sending him into more financial downfall. Clark's Business the Lehman Brothers ends up going bankrupt despite his efforts. In my book there isn't "someone" that is necessarily against my main character Jende but its the situation he's in that's against him, Jende has all the legal papers he needs but still isn't fully accepted, "In America today, having documents is not enough." (Mbue 307) The real antagonist is the system itself and not a person.
