The sugar shack was swarmed with the smell of maple. Late night work was enjoyed sitting near the warm evaporator turning sap into syrup. The transition of winter into spring has been my favorite time of year since it involves delicious maple filled donuts, maple sundaes, pancakes, and other treats. On March’s fourth Sunday, sugar houses open to show the public how maple syrup has been made for hundreds of years. Since my sixth birthday I have helped my dad and brothers during Maple Season at Jillson’s Farm. As I have grown older I have seen the maple season gradually diminish; by the time I have kids there may not be much of a season left.
The thought of my children not being able to enjoy my favorite time of year is frightening. My children won’t be able to anxiously await Maine Maple Sunday. My kids will miss out on waking up early and going to the farm to eat delicious maple donuts, see the barn animals, and observe how sap is boiled into syrup. Not only will they miss out on all the delicious maple goodies but also gathering with friends and family after a snowy, secluded winter.
My children will miss out on the joys of maple season due to climate change. The period of cold nights and warm days in spring has been shortening, causing problems for maple lovers. I may not be able to bring my family to Maine Maple Sunday and show them the beauty of the season because of climate change. I may have no choice but to only tell my children the stories of being with my dad and brothers collecting and boiling each spring.

This is an interesting piece because it helps to show the dangers that out changing climates can pose. I also enjoy maple sunday because I think that Maple syrup cooking is one of the most pleasant scents, and the taste of homemade syrup is delicious. This post reminds me of the wonders of this special day.
It’s scary to think of how the world is changing and all the things our children will miss out on, all the amazing things we got to do like Maple Sunday. Maple Sunday is such a great time for families to bond and of course there is great food, its really to bad that things are changing so fast.
