Book Review: Rainbow Boys

The book ‘Rainbow Boys’ by Alex Sanchez is a book that was publish in October of 2001. This book has 272 pages and was published by Simon and Schuster books for young readers. The genres are; young adult, fiction, romance, LGBT, and coming of age.

This book is the first book in a trilogy of books from the perspective of three guys in high school, the same high school, and their stories about being gay, how they dealt with it in high school, and coming to terms with it. Jason Carrillo is a jock, and he has a girlfriend, but he often finds himself imagining and dreaming of himself with guys rather than his girlfriend. Kyle Meeks knows that he is gay, but he is not out to anyone, not even his parents. Then there is Nelson Glassman, he is out and proud.

This book is a very touching one with many twists and turns about these three teenagers and hurdles they struggle with and overcome. I do recommend this book to people who may be going through the struggles of being gay, still in the closet, or are out and proud. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy books with coming out and LGBT in them. If you didn’t know already LGBT means lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.

This book is well likes and has won an award for Lambda Literary Award and many achievements, it was also even a Blue Ribbon Winner. There are many ups and downs for each of these three boys. There was a part in the book where there was an HIV scare between two boys in this book that makes your heart pound in anticipation, hanging there, waiting to know if they are going to be okay or not. There are actually quite a few parts in the books where this happens, where you are on the edge of your seat as you read. Lots of people who read this book, say they read this whole book in one setting, not putting it down once. I was one of those people.

As soon as you’re done reading this book, it makes you immediately want to get the second book and start reading it. ‘Rainbow Boys’ all in all is a breathtaking and amazing book where you’ll be wanting more and more, not wanting the third book to end, because when it does, the series is over.

Wow, you did very good on describing this book, and I know because I actually have read that book before. It was a long time ago and I wasn’t actually looking for that genre but since I read fiction/ fantasy/ action/ romance books I wanted to read something more realistic. So I went to the school’s library and went to that section and say that book and I thought ‘hey why not’. I was not fully prepared when I read that book because when I got it I didn’t even know what ‘rainbow’ references were (meaning gay) but it was not a bad book. I liked your description of the book very much :).
