I know almost everyone I meet has at least one social media account. Today’s world does not see students, parents, and even teachers without Facebook, Instagram or Twitter accounts, and that isn’t a good thing. People are always distracted and doing activities like texting and driving, failing school, and these social media apps are also starting mental health problems. Even though some individuals might claim that social media gives an opportunity for users to interact with other people and learn something new, there is no doubt that the drawbacks of social media far outweigh the benefits. Social media distracts people a lot, is harmful to mental health, and plays a great role in the spread of false information. This is why people should give a second thought to their use of social media.
The most problematic consequence of the use of social media is the way they distract users, particularly students. Social media platforms are created to distract users for a very long time by sending notifications, likes, and recommendations. The temptation to look at the phone all the time does not allow many students to concentrate and get high grades. Furthermore, social media can have negative effects on the mental health of the individual. For example, Instagram gives a perfect image of what someone else’s life looks like. Teenagers who devote many hours of their time trying to compare themselves to such perfection experience anxiety and low self-respect. A fact is that scientific studies reveal that there is a correlation between regular use of social media and high cases of depression among teenagers. It is quite ironic how social media companies that were invented to unite people ended up causing more problems.
In conclusion, social media is a platform that requires careful consideration from everyone such as students, teachers, and parents. Despite some advantages of social networks in connecting users and sharing information, the distractive nature and impact on the mental health of people make them more harmful then useful. Being responsible for time spent on social media platforms is important and necessary.
